The highly anticipated multiMAN theme, "The Media Cabinet & Construction Kit v1.0", was released today by shagratt71. The theme is set to appear like a common wood bookshelf that contains your various PS3 titles. The shelves also contain various knick-nacks which you can customize via the included Photoshop PSD files.

Here is The Media Cabinet v1.0. Included in the package is a single PSD file which can be used in any version of Photoshop or similar program to move and manipulate the multitude of specially designed shelf items, more item packs will be released in future updates. The actions palette is still not fully functional and will be released in v1.01. I would just like to thank Dean for all the hard work he puts into his multiMAN and I look forward to releasing more themes for it in the future.

Brink - 3.60 Game Working on Rebug CFW 3.55.1 With Patch

Brink, a recently released first-person shooter for the PlayStation 3, originally required users to have 3.60 firmware installed on their consoles. That meant gamers with custom firmware installed were out of luck when it came to playing this title. That has now changed with the help of (what appears to be) a slip up by the developer and or Sony. The title recently had a title update (patch) officially released and hackers were surprised to find out it was encrypted with 3.55 keys. What this means for users is that with a simple PARAM.SFO version edit and installation of the official retail game patch, they can now play the game on lower version firmware such as 3.55.1 Rebug CFW and possibly others.

Spring 2011 Dashboard Update Adds Paypal, Avatar Kinect & XGD3 - Drops May 19

<="" img="">
In this past week, Xbox users were able to stream content via the new Hulu+ app added in the dashboard. In the next week, they will be allowed to do even more as Microsoft will release the long awaited Spring 2011 dashboard update to users everywhere. The new dashboard will be rolled out between May 19 and May 30. Here is what Microsoft is planning with this update.
Support of the XGD3 Disc Format
The main underlying feature of the new dashboard will be the support of the XGD3 disc format. As you know, the new format increases the disc size on dual layer discs but extends on the anti-piracy methods that Microsoft will implement.
In order to support the new disc format, the new dashboard update will be flashing new firmware updates to DVD drives. If you have a drive with an iXtreme firmware flashed, you may fail the update. However, c4eva is already on it with the upcoming LT 2.0 firmwares.
Paypal Added As A Payment Option
After the new update, users will be able to link and use the funds from their Paypal accounts to make payments through the console. With this, there's no need to dump the funds needed to your account, wait a few days, withdraw the money, go to the store ... you know the deal.
Avatar Kinect on May 27
Although not part of the dashboard update, Avatar Kinect will be available on May 27. Like the name suggests, Avatar Kinect uses the Kinect motion controller to animate your avatar in the chatrooms available through this app.
This is all that Microsoft has provided. Of course, if you value your Xbox with an iXtreme firmware, don't update to the new dashboard until it is confirmed safe to do so. If you decide to jump the gun, then you are on your own if you collect flags, bans and/or bricks along the way. We'll keep you updated as time goes on.

multiMAN Theme - The Media Cabinet Construction Kit v1.0 Preview

An ex-graphic artist by the name of Shagratt has been in the process of creating this masterpiece. The theme is set to appear like a book shelf with your various game titles placed on it. Shagratt also intends to release Photoshop .PSD files with theme, so that you can customize the various nick-nacks that appear on the shelves. The preview photos of this upcoming theme really speak for themselves.

This is more than just another theme for multiMAN, ex-graphic artist Shagratt has created a virtual shelving cabinet to beautifully present and display your games, movies and music and that's not all. Shagratt has included a specially designed PSD file to be used in Photoshop or similar program to move and manipulate the multitude of specially designed shelf items that are included in the package. Some of the items included are figurines of game characters, photo frames to place photographs of your choice in, cups to decorate and modify to your liking, game and movie cases. Also, for those that are not familiar with photoshop, things have been made simpler and all automated through the actions palette. Shagratt tells me that more shelf item sets will be added with future updates and improvements and if you leave a message in the multiMAN forum he will try his best to fulfill your request.

Third Attack Being Planned Against Sony

Cnet is reporting that a THIRD attack against Sony is slated to take place this weekend. The hackers are currently in the planning phase of the attack and are claiming it is in retaliation for how poorly the original PSN breach was handled. This time around the hackers intend to publish any and all data that was retrieved from Sony's servers. Such information could include names, addresses, credit cards, and more. The most shocking revelation to come from this story is that the hacking group is claiming to still have access to certain aspects of Sony's network. If this proves to be true, it would be a horrendous blow to Sony.

A group of hackers says it is planning another wave of cyberattacks against Sony in retaliation for its handling of the PlayStation Network breach.

An observer of the Internet Relay Chat channel used by the hackers told CNET today that a third major attack is planned this weekend against Sony's Web site. The people involved plan to publicize all or some of the information they are able to copy from Sony's servers, which could include customer names, credit card numbers, and addresses, according to the source. The hackers claim they currently have access to some of Sony's servers.

Should the planned attack succeed, it would be the latest blow in a series of devastating security breaches of Sony's servers over the past month. The failure of Sony's server security has ignited investigations by the FBI, the Department of Justice, Congress, and the New York State Attorney General, a well as data security and privacy authorities in the U.K., Canada, and Taiwan.

Several weeks ago the hacker group known as Anonymous targeted several Sony Web sites, including Sony.com and SonyStyle.com, with a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack in retaliation for what its members saw as Sony's unfair legal action against hacker George Hotz. Two weeks ago Sony's PlayStation Network, along with its Qriocity service and Sony Online, were the target of an attack that exposed the personal information of more than 100 million Sony customers. Sony was forced to shut down PSN, Qriocity, and Sony Online, and is currently working to bring them back online after rebuilding the security of its servers.

Sony says it doesn't know who orchestrated what it's calling a "highly sophisticated, planned" attack, but it has dropped hints that the group Anonymous is involved. Kazuo Hirai, chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment, told a Congressional subcommittee in a letter yesterday that the intruders on its servers planted a file named "Anonymous" containing the statement "We are Legion," part of the group's tagline.

Anonymous issued a statement yesterday denying it was involved in the PSN breach. "While we are a distributed and decentralized group, our 'leadership' does not condone credit card theft," the statement said.

Now it seems the same group of hackers that was able to infiltrate the PSN servers is planning to hit back against Sony.

Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

PS3 Dual Boot GameOS/Linux CFW Released

The PS3 dev scene has seemed a bit dead lately, but with this latest release, it's quite clear that development is still going on behind the scenes. Geoffrey Levand has brought back what Sony once took away, OtherOS. Today he has released a dual boot custom firmware, which allows booting of OtherOS or GameOS. However, it's a bit more than Sony's typical OtherOS.

(This video is via Graf_Chokolo's method but is similar to how booting Linux via CFW looks)

This time around OtherOS has full access to GameOS, access to HV SS services (Dispatcher Manager, LPAR 1, and much more. This CFW also allows downgrading without service mode, the ability to deactivate/activate HDD/VFLASH encryption, as well as other features. At the moment this method is recommended for more advanced users until more user friendly guides are released.

PS3 Dual Boot GameOS/Linux CFW

Note: Currently to start OtherOS. boot_otheros.pkg then reboot.pkg and that will load petitboot. Slim users (Version 1.0-r0) you must unload the slim usb drivers in order to boot.

All tools beep twice if they succeed !!!

Source code for all tools and patches is freely available. Create your own dual boot.
git.gitbrew.org/ps3/

Features:
  • Into HV integrated OtherOS bootloader loader (compatible with OtherOS bootloader on 3.15)
  • OtherOS bootloader is booted directly from HV, no GameOS is involved.
  • Process of booting OtherOS bootloader loader is very similar to 3.15 method
  • Booting Linux from HDD/USB/BD/Network
  • Linux with GameOS rights
  • Full access to all HV SS services (Dispatcher Manager) from GameOS or Linux
  • Full access to all System Manager services
  • Ability to create/modify/remove repository nodes in LPAR 1 (e.g. with ps3dm-utils or ps3hvc-utils).
This ability gives you much power over the whole system because many layers of PS3 use repository nodes to exchange information.
  • Enabled QA mode in Update Manager
  • Downgrading without USB dongle or Service Mode
  • Ability to deactivate/activate HDD/VFLASH encryption (e.g. with ps3stor-utils)
  • Suuport for ps3-utils. You can flash new OtherOS bootloader from Linux e.g.

Notes:
  • Tested 3.41 and 3.55 on PS3 Slim with Gentoo and Debian Squeeze but should work on PS3 Fat without problems
  • Bug reports are welcome, send it please to geoffrey.levand@mail.ru

Work in progress:
  • Creating OtherOS partitions directly on HDD (not VFLASH)
  • Permanently disabling HDD/VFLASH encryption
  • Mapping of HTAB with R/W permission
  • SYSCON access from LPAR 2
  • FreeBSD support

Installing OtherOS bootloader

  • Tested ONLY on PS3 models with VFLASH
  • During deleting of VFLASH regions GameOS will ask you to reinstall firmware, don't do it, just press PS3 button and continue
  • I use petitboot as OtherOS bootloader. You could use a different one.
  • The following order of steps is important
  • Delete VFLASH region 6
  • Delete VFLASH region 5
  • Create VFLASH region 5
  • Create VFLASH region 6
  • Install OtherOS bootloader on VFLASH with "Install OtherOS"

Booting OtherOS bootloader

  • Run "Boot OtherOS"
  • Reboot GameOS with "Reboot"

Creating a VFLASH partition for Linux

Notes:
  • Works ONLY on PS3 models with VFLASH
  • Warning: All your HDD data will be lost, so make a backup
  • I'm currently working on a solution for PS3 models with NAND flash
  • Resize VFLASH (creates a 40GB free space on VFLASH, if you need more then feel free to recompile it)
  • Reboot GameOS
  • Create VFLASH region 7

Installing Linux with petitboot

Installing Gentoo GNU/Linux from a Unix/Linux System

Partitioning with fdisk

Notes:
  • I used petitboot to install Debian and Gentoo on VFLASH
  • I used fdisk to partition ps3vflashh
  • Make sure you create a swap partition
  • Creating a ready to use Linux distribution images is a work in progress

Booting Linux with petitboot

Notes:
  • USB driver in petitboot has problems on PS3 Slim. The problem lies in Linux USB driver.
  • Currently i'm trying to fix this problem in Linux kernel
  • I temporarily use my boot_linux.sh script to boot a Linux installed on VFLASH from petitboot

Slim Liteon 0401 Drive Surfaces

While the scene steadily itches past the protections present in the Slim Liteon 0225 drive, Microsoft pushes a new Liteon drive version. Paintball9 from Xbox-Scene picked up a 4GB Slim unit manufactured last month to find a Liteon drive with the 0401 firmware flashed to it.
As you can see, the drive was manufactured in March 2011. Paintball9 reports that Jungleflasher does not see the drive at all.
<="" img=""> Canada
TEAM: FSHE
Lot: 1114X
MFR date 2011-04-01
Let's see where this one goes. If you want to help out somewhat, you can donate your drive to c4eva if it arrives as a 0401.

x360key and Maximus 360 Lizard partnership announced

Xbox 360 Console
x360key has licensed the key extraction technology used in Maximus Lizard. This means that x360key will be able to extract the unique key from all Xbox 360 drives; Samsung, Hitachi, Benq, Liteon, and Slim Liteon - including the latest 0225 model.
Xbox 360 DVD Drive firmware flashing is *NOT* required to use x360key. However, this is a feature that may be added in a future x360key firmware update.
